Term 1 (Autumn 1) 2024

Maths

We will begin the year by recapping the pupil’s understanding of adding and subtracting across 10.

In this unit children will: learn about the addition of three or more single-digit numbers in the context of both aggregation and augmentation, understand the importance of the laws of commutativity and associativity in the context of adding three or more numbers, practise applying written and mental strategies for the addition of three or more addends, using partitioning, commutativity and associativity.

After that, we will focus on Place Value and Numbers to 1,000.

In this unit children will: gain a deeper understanding of the number 100, make links to common measures, such as pounds and metres, extend their understanding of place value to 3 digit numbers and draw on known strategies and number facts to calculate across the hundreds boundary.

English

Our literary theme this term is ‘Magic and Wonder’, this theme will be explored by introducing the pupils to three wonderful texts; The First Drawing by Mordicai Gerstein, Leon and the Place Between by Angela McAllister and The Heart and the Bottle by Oliver Jeffers. Pupils will have the opportunity to read, discuss and share opinions on the texts whilst also having the opportunity to respond to the text through their creative writing. This will include retellings of stories, character descriptions and diary entries.

As part of this topic, pupils will also study The Lost Spells by Robert MacFarlane and Jackie Morris and Arthur and the Golden Rope by Joe Todd Stanton in their Reading lessons.
History

Through this topic, pupils will gain an understanding of the beginnings of society and the ways that people lived through The Stone Age, The Bronze Age and The Iron Age. They will discover how technological developments accelerated these changes and improved the lives of early man. They will also develop an understanding of how long ago The Stone Age was and put this into context amongst other periods of history which they have already learned. They will question how we have come to know so much about this period despite it being so long ago. As part of this study, there will also be a trip to Stonehenge which will allow pupils to bring their learning to life.

Science

Our Science topic this term is Light. Through this topic pupils will learn that darkness is the absence of light and that light travels directly from a light source to our eyes. We will also discuss reflection and how this is implemented in everyday objects like mirrors, cat’s eyes and reflective clothing. Pupils will also learn about sun safety and debate whether the sun is a ‘hero or villain’ by weighing up its positive and negative effects.

Art

In Art, pupils will be building on the skills learned in previous years to develop their ability to sketch. They will explore the use of different pencil and how these can be effectively used to show line, tone and texture in their sketches. Pupils will develop the skill of looking closely at an object and depicting what seen. The topic will culminate with the pupils creating their own Stone Age cave drawings.

R&W

Pupils will study Islam with the enquiry question 'How do Muslims know the best way to live?'. They will consider how Muslims know what is right and what is wrong as well as the best way to live in addition to thinking about their own understanding of what is right and wrong. They will also consider what a good life is and think about making good decisions.

PSHE

In PSHE our topic is Being Me in My World. Through this topic pupils will discuss setting personal goals, recognising their worth and achievements as well as understanding how their actions can affect themselves as well as others.

PE

This term our PE days are Wednesday and Friday. On this day, child must come to school wearing their Talbot PE kit.
